Patten, Wornom, Hatten & Diamonstein began its practice by representing victims of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses. From the 1970s to present day, the Virginia asbestos lawyers at the firm have committed themselves to representing those injured as a result of negligent asbestos manufacturers, and along the way have garnered countless awards, recognitions and ground-breaking results in the courtroom. Although proud to have played a significant role in legislation which provides legal recourse to mesothelioma victims, the asbestos lawyers at the firm are not content to rely on their past achievements. As more patients are diagnosed with mesothelioma, a disease which may not present symptoms until many decades after exposure, the Virginia asbestos law firm continues to advocate for asbestos victims’ rights and record multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for their clients.
THE VIRGINIA STATE BAR RULES OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT REQUIRE ALL ATTORNEYS TO MAKE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT AND DISCLAIMER TO THEIR CASE RESULTS. SETTLEMENT AND VERDICT IN ALL CASES DEPEND ON VARIOUS FACTORS AND CIRCUMSTANCES, WHICH ARE UNIQUE TO EACH CASE. THEREFORE, PAST RESULTS IN CASES ARE NOT A GUARANTEE OR PREDICTION OF SIMILAR RESULTS IN FUTURE CASES WHICH PATTEN, WORNOM, HATTEN & DIAMONSTEIN AND ITS LAWYERS MAY UNDERTAKE.
The asbestos litigation attorneys at PWHD are led by the firm’s manager Robert R. Hatten, who has won landmark cases, dozens of jury verdicts and thousands of multi-million dollar settlements for victims of mesothelioma and asbestos-related diseases. His pioneering work in representing mesothelioma victims began well before 1975 when he filed the first 11 asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma claims for Newport News shipyard workers looking to obtain benefits under the Longshoremen’s and Harbor Worker’s Compensation Act; he recovered the first compensation awards for these workers two years later. Throughout the years, his accomplishments have continued to mount. Robert R. Hatten is proud to have helped recover the first Virginia mesothelioma jury verdict against Johns-Manville Corp., the largest asbestos manufacturers; obtain the first punitive damages award in a Virginia product liability case; and persuade the VA general assembly to approve a special law allowing the consolidation of asbestos lawsuits. He has also been selected by his peers and asbestos lawyers across the nation to testify in a nation class action, and was the first to receive the Courageous Advocacy Award from the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association in 1987. Most recently, he obtained the first jury verdict in Virginia against Exxon for $25 million, one of the highest in the state for the last 25 years.
From the decades of experience in mesothelioma litigation, the attorneys at PWHD understand that being diagnosed with a serious asbestos-related disease can be a stressful and confusing time. As such, the firm has launched its own website aiming to help asbestos victims understand how asbestos product manufacturers may be liable for their illness, available treatment options, and areas throughout Virginia where they may have been exposed.
