James H. ("Jamie") Shoemaker, Jr. joined the firm in July of 1993 after two years with the law firm of Kaufman & Canoles in Norfolk. He became a partner in the firm in 1996. His practice areas include labor and employment law, personal injury and commercial litigation. He has represented numerous clients in personal injury, harassment and employment related issues in Virginia and around the country. He has successfully tried many cases to verdict in both state and federal courts.
Mr. Shoemaker was recently named to the 2006 edition of “Best Lawyers in America”. For five consecutive years Virginia Business Magazine has named Mr. Shoemaker to its "Virginia Legal Elite" listing of the state's top lawyers. He has spoken at numerous seminars on employment law topics including wrongful discharge, sexual harassment, wage and hour issues, the Family and Medical Leave Act, workplace policies and safe hiring issues.
Mr. Shoemaker received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from the Virginia Military Institute in 1984, after attending on a Navy ROTC scholarship. Following his graduation from VMI, he served six years as a naval officer. While in the Navy he served as Navigator and Tactical Action Officer aboard a destroyer and made two deployments to the Middle East. After serving in the Navy, he received his Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond in 1991.
Mr. Shoemaker is involved in many community activities and serves on various boards and commissions. Governor Allen appointed him as a commissioner of the seven member Hampton Roads Sanitation District Commission in 1995; HRSD a public waste water utility with an annual budget of approximately $110,000,000.00. He was reappointed to HRSD by Governor Gilmore in 2000. Mr. Shoemaker formerly served as president of the Sarah Boawell Hudgins Foundation and remains a member of the board of trustees. He also served as Secretary of the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA.
Mr. Shoemaker resides in Hampton with his wife, Kimberly, and his daughter, Jill.
