Patrick Pettitt is a partner in the firm’s Business and Real Estate Group. Mr. Pettitt focuses his practice on providing full service legal representation and guidance to residential landlords, ranging from owners with one rental property to Virginia’s largest property management groups and apartment complex owners. Mr. Pettitt does not accept tenants as clients.
Mr. Pettitt and his team provide turn-key solutions to landlord/tenant clients that need ongoing pre-judgment and post-judgment collection support. Using his background as a mechanical engineer and his desire for more efficient solutions, Mr. Pettitt has developed sophisticated, proprietary software that allows him to handle high volumes of monthly Leases, Five Day Notices of Non-Compliance, Unlawful Detainers, Garnishments, Interrogatories and other collection and Court related documents. Also, because his software has been custom designed, from the ground up, Mr. Pettitt can tailor his software and generate any managerial report his landlord/tenant clients need.
Mr. Pettitt is now developing a web based client interface that will allow secure, real time access to the status of individual client’s pending residential leasing and collection matters. That service is expected to be fully available to Mr. Pettitt’s landlord/tenant clients by September 2007.
For Mr. Pettitt’s existing clients and referral sources, he also continues to advise and guide his existing client base of for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations on a broad range of day-to-day operational issues that face any growing business or organization. His clients range in size from new business start-ups to regional and national clients. He leads clients through complex business transactions, from business formation to mergers and acquisitions, contract preparation and negotiation, as well as full service civil, criminal and traffic litigation in Virginia's State Courts.
EDUCATION: Mr. Pettitt received his Juris Doctorate degree from the William & Mary law school in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he was a student-member of the Moot Court board and chaired the William B. Spong, Jr. National Invitational Moot Court Tournament. Mr. Pettitt was also selected for the National Trial Team competition and was inducted into the Order of the Barristers.
Prior to going to law school, Mr. Pettitt received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He then worked full-time for several years with the U.S. Army as a civilian government contracting officer’s technical representative and, later, as the sole staff engineer assigned to his organization’s command group. While working for the government, Mr. Pettitt was honored for his work with four awards and commendations and was invited, as a keynote speaker, to deliver a speech to a national, regional engineering symposium for young engineers. Mr. Pettitt also authored and published two technical reports.
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS: Mr. Pettitt is currently a member of the Peninsula Apartment Council of the Peninsula Home Builders’ Association and the Central Virginia Apartment Association and has recently joined the Tidewater Builders’ Association’s apartment council He has previously served as an Area Representative to the Board of Governors to the Virginia State Bar Real Property section.
COMMUNITY: In addition to Mr. Pettitt’s professional activities, he also volunteers considerable time to the community. Mr. Pettitt served for many years as a board member and then President of Peninsula Habitat for Humanity, Inc., a non-profit home building organization focused on eliminating impoverished housing. Mr. Pettitt was also active as a member and officer of the Oyster Point Rotary Club and the Warwick Rotary Club, both of Newport News, Virginia. He is a founding member of The Children’s Home of Hampton Roads, an emergency and urgent need short term shelter for children and families.
