Born in Hampton, Virginia in 1944, "Chip" was raised there, the oldest child with five sisters (no brothers!). He graduated from Hampton High School in 1962 and the University of Virginia in 1967 (B.A., Latin American Area Studies). After marrying Pamela Chisman in 1967 and teaching Spanish and Russian at Kecoughtan High School in Hampton, he enlisted in the army in August of 1968. He served in Vietnam as a combat infantryman and was medically discharged in 1970. He once again taught at Kecoughtan High School before entering the University of Virginia School of Law in the fall of 1970. After obtaining his juris doctor in June of 1973, he began a general practice with a large firm in Newport News, where he remained until 1976, when he became one of a two-man law firm in Hampton. By this time, Chip had begun to focus on estate and tax planning and corporate law. In 1987, he joined his current law firm, Patten, Wornom, Hatten & Diamonstein, L.C. (formerly Patten, Wornom & Watkins, L.C.), where he continues to specialize in estate and tax planning and corporate law.

The eldest of his three children made Chip a grandfather in May of 2000. Thus, he has added doting on said grandchild to his list of other pastimes: gourmand eating, going to the movies, traveling and working crossword puzzles. Pamela and he are still married, despite she being his one and only secretary since April of 1993 (but who’s counting?).
