Will Harty is partner with Patten, Wornom, Hatten & Diamonstein, LC in Newport News, Virginia where he primarily engages in Virginia and maritime product liability and toxic tort litigation and appellate practice. Mr. Harty has served on trial teams winning multi-million dollar product liability verdicts. In his appellate practice, Will has defended verdicts on complex legal issues before the Virginia Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. Most recently, he wrote winning briefs in the Virginia Supreme Court and in the United States Supreme Court in John Crane, Inc. v. Jones, and John Crane, Inc. v. Oney, which have been instrumental in permitting land-based shipyard workers working on vessels on navigable waters to bring their claims under maritime law.
Mr. Harty has been recognized by Virginia Business Magazine as one of Virginia’s Legal Elites in the young lawyer category (an annual list of the top Virginia Attorneys under 40 as voted by their peers), and by Richmond Magazine as a “Virginia Rising Star” (top 2.5% of Virginia Attorneys 40 years or younger or in practice 10 years or less). He is an alum of Texas Tech University and Regent University Law School, where he served as a managing editor of the Law Review and was recognized in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
Mr. Harty is a former law clerk for the Honorable Judge D. Arthur Kelsey of the Virginia Court of Appeals. He is currently admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Virginia Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He is an active member of the American Association for Justice, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and the Newport News Bar Association.
A former infantry officer and Airborne Ranger, Will served with the First Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment at Fort Bragg, NC, and with the Second Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Opposition Forces) at Fort Irwin, CA. He led soldiers in combat operations in Panama during Operation Just Cause and in Iraq during the first Gulf War.
