BIOCELL and CANCER
BIOCELL is the tradename of Allergan PLC’s texturing process and refers to the textured silicone elastomer shell on both saline and silicone filled breast implants, as well as tissue extenders. BIOCELL textured breast implants and/or tissue extenders have been associated with the uncommon incidence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a cancer of the immune system. BIOCELL breast implants, tissue extenders, or both were used as part of breast augmentation surgery, breast reconstruction surgery, and also revision surgery after a primary breast implant surgery. Any patient that underwent cosmetic or reconstructive surgery using Allergan BIOCELL products may be at risk.
On July 24, 2019, upon notification of updated safety information provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Allergan PLC announced a voluntary worldwide recall of BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders. The FDA requested that Allergan recall all BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders marketed in the U.S. due to the risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). “Based on the currently available information, the FDA's analysis demonstrated that the risk of BIA-ALCL with Allergan BIOCELL textured implants is approximately 6 times the risk of BIA-ALCL with textured implants from other manufacturers marketing in the U.S.” This means that individuals who have been implanted with BIOCELL breast implants or tissue extenders are at an increased risk of developing this form of cancer.
PWHD is currently investigating claims for individuals who have received BIOCELL breast implants and/or tissue extenders and who have been diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
