Donald N. Patten is a native of Newport News, Virginia. He was educated at the University of Richmond where he received a B.A. degree in 1964 and at the University of Virginia where he received a law degree in 1967. In 1968, he joined the law firm of Patten & Wornom (predecessor of Patten, Wornom, Hatten & Diamonstein, L.C.)

For more than thirty-two years, Mr. Patten has represented individuals and businesses in product liability and negligence actions, commercial contract disputes and real estate business matters. For the last twenty years, the primary focus of his practice has been asbestos product liability litigation. He has represented thousands of injured asbestos plaintiffs in lawsuits filed in a number of states including Virginia, Ohio, Texas and Mississippi. He has argued pretrial motions and complex legal issues in numerous state and federal courts and has deposed hundreds of expert and/or factual witnesses, including medical experts, economists, industrial hygienists, State-of-the-Art witnesses, corporate executives and shipyard workers. He has participated in the trial and/or settlement of thousands of asbestos cases. Mr. Patten has represented asbestos clients in bankruptcy and/or class-action proceedings in New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Missouri, Illinois, and Connecticut and is presently on the Claimants’ Committee for the Babcock & Wilcox Reorganization in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mr. Patten is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the American Board of Trial Advocates, the American Bar Association and the Newport News Bar Association. He is the Immediate Past-President of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and has received an “av” rating, the highest rating awarded by Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directory for legal competence. Mr. Patten has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Virginia Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He has been selected by his peers to be included in the 2001-2002 edition of “The Best Lawyers in America.”

Mr. Patten has long been active in many civic and educational organizations. He has previously served the city of Newport News as Chairman of the Planning Commission, Chairman of the Peninsula Airport Commission, member of the Newport News City Council and Vice Mayor. He is a past member of the Virginia State Council of Higher Education where he served on the Executive Committee and the Christopher Newport University Education Foundation where he served as President. He was formerly the Rector and a member of the Board of Visitors of the College of William & Mary. He formerly served as Chairman of Mary Immaculate Hospital and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Peninsula Alliance for Economic Development and The Mariners’ Museum. Mr. Patten is a recipient of the Brotherhood Citation Award from the National Conference of Community and Justice.
